Martti A. Lundstrom, 86, died suddenly at his
home in Sun City West, Arizona, December 8, 2008. Martti and his wife,
Shirley Carlson Lundstrom, were originally from Republic, Michigan. After
a stint in the Army Air Corps as a navigator during WWII, Martti returned to
Michigan Technological University and graduated as a Mechanical Engineer.
He began working for Marathon Corp. in Neenah, Wisconsin after his graduation
from Tech in 1948. Martti was transferred to the Menominee, Michigan
paperboard/waxtex plant in 1959, as the plant engineer, and in 1963 transferred
to the Marathon/American Can Green Bay mill, where he became paper mill
superintendant. In 1966, Martti became manager of the Green Bay mill, and
later worked on projects in Naheola, AL., Marathon, Ontario, and Eugene,
OR. In 1987, he retired from had now become the James River
Corporation. Several years after beginning their retirement, Martti and
Shirley left Green Bay and moved to Sun City West in 1993, though they
continued to return to the Midwest to spend summers in Eagle Harbor,
Michigan. Martti and Shirley were married 60 years, celebrating that 60th
anniversary this past June. In October, 2008 Shirley died in Sun City
West after a long illness. Martti and Shirley are survived by their three
children: Susan Regan of San Diego, CA; Diane Knipping of Wauwatosa, WI, and
Tom Lundstrom of Alexandria, VA.; 4 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
Shirley is also survived by her sister Helen Raley of Rochester, MN. Her
older sister, June Sauter of Waukesha, WI, died in January 2009. A
memorial service for Martti and Shirley, will be conducted July 10, 2009, in
Eagle Harbor, Michigan.
