- When I opened the "electronic mailbox" I found:
- "I writing to tell you how much I enjoy visiting the Eagle Harbor web-site and how much I am looking forward to actually visiting Eagle Harbor later this summer. I am an Eagle Harbor enthusiast through marriage. My wife's family (Carl Lindblom, Barbara Ann Lindblom, and John Lindblom ...) have been visiting for years. I first visited about twelve years ago while
dating Lisa Lindblom (now my wife) and have been back several times since.
Lisa and I have a three year old son, Michael, who will be making his first
trip this summer. Needless to say, we are looking forward to exploring the
shore and woods with him and watching the sunset in the evening." (Tom Burns. 6/24)
- "I liked your site. Everything worked as advertised. I found your page
through Quincy Mining Company link. My wife and I vacation in the UP every summer just north of Hancock on her parents summer home. Their name is Kinnunen. We visit Eagle Harbor each year. The UP is probably the most beautiful place I've ever seen and we look forward to going every year.
Sure wish there was work to be found in the UP, we'd move in a second if
I could find a job that paid well. My wife and I reside in Fairview Heights, Illinois. It's about 15 miles from St. Louis." (Michael Carter, 6/22)
- "RETURNED AGAIN TO YOUR SITE TODAY.I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM ANY
PEOPLE WHO WERE STATIONED AT CAFS.MY WIFE IS FROM COLUMBUS OH.I MET HER
WHEN SHE VISITED HER SISTER AND MY BROTHER-IN-LAW WHO WERE STATIONED THERE IN
1965/66.WE WERE MARRIED IN NOVEMBER 1966.SO AS YOU CAN SEE,THE 'COPPER
COUNTRY' HAS BEEN QUITE GOOD TO ME....WBROWLEY@AOL.COM " (6/20)
- "Thought I would send a little note to tell you how pleased I am with
your website. My name is Keith Lamerand and am presently residing in Redford. I try to touch base with your site on a daily basis and it brings back alot of good memories from growing up in the Harbor. Sometimes I wonder how I did it, since I was the only kid there until I was eleven years old. Every weekend, though, the Ellis' would come down and I would be rushing across the ballfeild to help unload the car. When I was eleven, a great change came to my life....the Marshalls moved to the Harbor.....culture shock...seven girls and one boy, not counting the older kids who were already on their own. I am in touch with some of them still, as my company is currently a customer of theirs. That same year Bill Alband moved to the Harbor...setting the scene for a Trio +...(the plus being Tom and Tim Ellis and Brian and Bruce Koop). Growing up in the Harbor and returning to visit are not the same, though I do enjoy it when I can get up there..which, now, is far and few between. Well George, keep it up for technology and allowing us to enjoy the Harbor from a distance." (Keith Lamerand, Default@wisne.com, 6/18)
- "JUST 'RE-FOUND' YOUR SITE AND LOVE IT.I WAS BORN IN JACKSON MI.WE

GREAT SERVICE" (BILL ROWLEY WBROWLEY@AOL.COM, 6/15)
- "My name is also Pat Ryan but am Mary Pat and a cousin of Patrick's. Being a Calumet native and a regular visitor to the Harbor this is
so informative and a fun way to spend the evening. Thank you for your
efforts and I will be sending a donation for the Lighthouse preservation. I have many wonderful memories of launching my Uncle Matt's boat from the area. Thank you again and I will be visiting in the future! Are Jean and Bob Simonson back from their winter sojourn? (Mary Pat Ryan, MPR@aol.com 6/13)
- "The pics and info here are great. Sent it on to people who no longer have the good fortune to live here. I am sure they will enjoy and get the urge to visit!"(Janet Hauswirth, 6/7)
- "Thought I would send you a great picture that Brad and Karen King took
last summer in August. We were across the bay last August, wrapping up a
beautiful beach day when Brad and Karen, and Todd and Lisa King came by
and asked us if we would like to join them for a sunset cruise in Bob King's
big wooden boat. It was a magnificent sunset. I look at this picture, and the looks on our faces (we're so happy!) and I think: that is what I love about Eagle Harbor; the fellowship and special times with friends who we love. I am an "outsider" to The Harbor but I love going up there and look forward to seeing everyone just as much as Paul (it's a good thing, because he probably never would of married me if I didn't). We are longing for The
Harbor now and look forward to seeing everyone the weekend of The Fourth. Of course, Paul is most excited for Jack's debut (our 9 month old son, born August 25th, 1998). I don't think we will be out of the car for two seconds and Paul will taking Jack to the Sickler's to meet Barb and Wayne-o, and then he will be down to Boggio's to that Jack can meet Jim and Anne. Thank you for doing the Eagle Harbor Web Page. It stays us over the long winters. Best wishes for lots of good sailing this summer!" (Amy Mergen Waitrovich,
Milwaukee, Wisconsin)
- "I assume the vessel has returned to the harbor. How bad is it there, given the low water level? I also note that you plan to go into "summer mode". I envy you, but would appreciate one last "walk about" prior to the season. Your last was in March. Also, what ever happened to the mysterious water leak? Was that fixed? Where was it? What of the store? Will Patty continue to operate it? Any new houses any where at the harbor?"(Mike Owen, 6/4)
- "I enjoyed your website! I had no problems while checking it out.I was checking out the Lake cam and linked to your site. I especially enjoyed the winter pictures. I have done some cross-country skiing at the Chassell Ski trails, so I liked the winter skiing pictures. We are now living in Greer, South Carolina. Actually the Blue Ridge Area north of Greer. We moved here in October of last year so we "missed" one winter in the Copper Country. It actually wasn't too hard to miss all the snow and cold. But I must admit it is beautiful and bright! We are now going to be experiencing our first southern summer. I think now is when we will appreciate and miss the CC! Here it is starting to get more humid. We turned on the AC for the first time last night. We have more mountain views than we do lakes. There are not very many "swimmable" lakes around either. We are used to going to Twin Lakes to a camp during the summer. THAT we will miss!! We usually made a few trips to the Copper Harbor and Eagle Harbor every year. It is beautiful there! Thanks for sharing the pictures!" (Terri, 6/3)
- "Pat Hamp, who runs the Keweenaw Co. Genweb site, suggested that I contact you about the following situation. I am sending you a copy of the e-mail that I sent to Pat, as follows:
I am hoping that you can ease my mind. My husband and I recently spent a few days up in the Keweenaw. While driving on 41, we saw an abandoned cemetery. I don't remember the exact location, but it was across the highway from a motel, and it was north of Calumet. Anyway, we explored a little, and were very saddened by what we found. The woods had taken over, and many of the stones had fallen and were in danger of being covered. We also noticed that there were several "markers" of orange tape on various trees, and hoped that it meant that someone was getting ready to do something before it was too late. I am hoping that you will be able give me some information on whether or not something is being done about this cemetery. Thanks for your
help." (Dawn, daniels@michweb.net, 6/3)
- "My name is Joe Hall, I live in Santa Cruz California, in 1997 I took my
two teenage children on a Finish Hertiage Tour of Northern Minnesota and
the UP. I have some second cousins who live in Lake Linden. They suggested that the kids and I drive up to see Eagle Harbor and Cooper harbor. Due to the typical teenage comments, I never made it past Eagle Harobr, but vowed to bring my wife back to see your lovely village. We will be visiting again between June 23th and June 24th or 25th and would like to spend several days in the village, while we visit our relatives in Lake Linden, the kids are now all in college and we have some free time. I saw the net page listing for the Shroeline Resort, but wondered if you had some other suggestions in terms of small houses etc. Santa Cruz is a vacation town, but it has grown up." (Joe Hall, rama@cruzio.com 5/30)
- "I love your "George's Eagle Harbor Web" site - every small town should have one. I grew up in Pinconning, Michigan, a little town of about 500 people and now live in Lansing. My first trip to the U.P. was in 1992 and it was love at first sight - I've taken every vacation there ever since, and even proposed to my fiance on Brockway Mountain during a beautiful sunset last July 26th. I work at the State Capitol, and still regret that the vote to make Calumet the state capital failed by a single vote way back when..." (Bill Carney, 5/25)
- "I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your (Bill Jackson''s) shot of the lake. I check in at least once a day to see what your weather is like up in Eagle Harbor. I have been coming up to the Keweenaw peninsula since
1941. My father use to bring us up there at least once a year. We use
to go out on the fishing boats, walk the woods, pick berries, just sit
by the lake and listen to the waves. We even did a lot of agate hunting
when we were young. I guess my heart will always be up north." (Marilyn Plyer , 5/18)
- "My Dad, Bob Masnado, bookmarked your webpage on my computer while he was
visiting...now I access it on a regular basis. Love the tidbits, memories,
calendar, etc.. Hoping to see a few more of my 40 year-old friends entering
their E-mail addresses so I can contact them!"(Nancy Masnado Bloch, 5/18)
- "My mother in law from Livonia found your web site and sent me down the address. Just wanted to drop you a note and let you know how much I enjoy it. I was introduced to the Keeweenaw about seven years ago by my wife. It remains one of my favorite places. I've visited in the summer and for the fall color which has yet to be rivaled. We were married in Eagle River and the sheriff and his wife (our witnesses) have convinced us we must make a
winter journey. Quite a trip from central Kentucky approximately 18 hours. We will make it someday soon. I have passed your site along to a lady I work with. Believe it or not she was born in Houghton and was absolutely shocked I knew of Eagle, Copper Harbor and the Keeweenaw. Her grandparents lived in Eagle River and her mom and dad still live north of Houghton. Thanks for giving those of us lucky enough to know of the Keeweenaw a little something to look forward to on the web. Keep it up. PS. I hope the lake shore property sales on the drive to Eagle Harbor are going slow. Such a
shame to clutter the view." (Murrell Thixton, 5/17)
- "TO THE LADY WHO THOUGHT I WAS THE GRANDAUGHER OF TOM AND KATHARINE JILBERT, I AM NOT THEIR GRANDAUGHTER. MY GRANDPARENTS AND PARENTS KNEW THEM. TOM AND KATHARINE AND MYSELF ATTENDED THE BAPTIST CHURCH AND I WOULD SIT WITH THEM EACH SUNDAY. TO SALLY HOCKING, YES, I REMEMBER TO THIS DAY LIIKALA'S PET SKUNK. TOM TOOK ME DOWN TO VISIT THEM ONE DAY AND NOT ANNOUNCED TO ME WAS THAT THIS WAS A PET SKUNK, SO NEEDLESS TO SAY, STANDING BY THE SIDEWALK AND OUT FROM THE BUSHES COMES PEPPI LAPEU AND I WAS IN HORROR AND SAID WE HAD BETTER BE MOVING THERE IS A SKUNK COMING UP THE SIDEWALK AND NO ONE MOVED, THEY JUST KEPT TALKING THEN MRS. LIIKALA TURNED AROUND AND WENT DOWN THE SIDEWALK AND PICKED IT UP. I THOUGHT SHE WAS A CRAZY WOMAN BUT THEN I REALIZED SHE WAS TALKING TO THIS PET LIKE A BABY. WHAT A SCARE INDEED!! I
USED TO VISIT MRS. LIKKALA AND HER PET SKUNK IN CALUMET. MY GRANDPA OWNED
A ROCKSHOP ON U.S. 41 IN DELAWARE YEARS AGO AND WE USED TO CRUISE THOSE ROADS
BACK AND FORTH TO THE HARBOR TO VISIT THE GENERAL STORE. TO ALL MY
ACQUAINTANCES FROM YEARS AGO, HELLO." (KATHLEEN JACKMAN-HILTUNEN,
tookiefk@aol.com, 5/17)
- "This is Ross Freshwater's parents reporting that Ross, Rodney Westlake, and Dean Lampe of Copper Harbor were recently attacked by a band of Gibralter monkeys looking for candy bars. In turn, the boys attacked the attractions of Spain, Portugal and Morocco with gusto and, presumably, a bit of the local beverages. Rodney is headed for medical school at Bastyr University of Naturopathic Medicine in Seattle this fall. Ross will attend Harvard's raduate school of education. Both should be in Eagle Harbor at Pig Roast time, if not sooner. Ah, to be young!"(Paul Freshwater, 5/15)
- "While all the EH folks are enjoying good weather, I'm getting my co-workers enthused for the move over to summer registration on the 14th. They look at me and say, "But its snowing out there! How can it be time for summer registration?" Yup, Ms. La Nina exerted her forces in the fall to give us a grand ski season and is now the bane of the Spud Farmers. Ground is too wet to plant those famous Idaho bakers. This sky gazer noticed about 20 bird types floating on the thermals this morning before entering the hallowed halls. A long pause of contemplation (2 changes of the traffic light/ I was on foot) brought a sense of calm. Those crows looked like eagles on a good soar. Therefore, I chose to transfer their play into my day. Now, several of the errant paying students won't have to deal with the closet Guido that could pop out anytime. Did this contemplation ability come from all those summer days wandering the secret spots in the Keweenaw?
Ingrained childhood adventures and insights are treasures for the rest of life. Here is to all those who were/are/will be fortunate to absorb any part of a Lake Superior summer."(Liz Benson, Pocatello ID, 5/13)
- "I just discovered your website via a link from mendotalighthouse.com.
Thanks for such a great site. I used to spend the summers of my youth
in E.H. We lived over on the east side of the harbor down the Grande
Marais road. For now please add my E-Mail address to the list. I'll
try to contribute to your site in the future."(Bill Ewart, 5/10)
- "My mother's maiden name was Krause. I was in contact with Sue Adams, however I did not say my grandfather Mike Krause built the Harvey house but that he lived there. The house is mentioned in History of Eagle Harbor as the Mike Krause house. My mother told me the white house was where her grandparents lived and that she lived in the house next door (it was green in '67 I think) which was the last time she was up there. I live in Livonia (Detroit area) which is about 700 miles away. We had made plans to come up the last two years but my husband ended up in the hospital both times and we were packed and ready to leave. God does watch over us as I don't know what we would have done if he got sick up there since we travel with our "Abby" who is 135lb Golden Retriever. I have shared "Hospital Lessons" with a two of my friends and it brought a tear or two to their eyes too. We've been there and you have expressed how it feels so perfectly. It brought back many memories for me, not as the patient but as the one keeping the all day and all night vigil. Many could learn from that article." (Cheryl, 5/7)
- "I truly enjoy the Pasty web site and yours. I have written before and indicated that the family camp is on Sand Bay. Since discovering these sites I go into them everyday as soon as I come home from work. I take a daily vacaction by looking at the lastest pictures and all the information of the lastest doings around the Keweenaw. Keep up the good work, and we need a new picture of Abby."(Carole Krueger, 4/5)
- "Thanks to Pete Speed, a Buckeye boy, the Eagle Harbor webb site became an instant hit with me. My first trip to Delaware barracks as a Buckeye boy was in 1950 and all my memories were fond. If someone needs some history of Eagle Harbor from the late 1940's through 1960's, I have a surprise for them. Joe Hellner maintained a diary during all those years. Each day he selected one Buckeye boy to write in the diary. The diary was ultimately typed. I believe that Pete Speed would know the whereabouts of the diary. The diary could be an excellent source for what happened in Eagle Harbor during this period."(Ken McAllister, 5/1)
