"Big Jim" MacNaughton, legendary General Manager of the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company, reportedly had a very fine cottage designed by a prominent American architect and constructed at Agate Harbor. Is this true? Is the cottage still there?
There is no record of Jim MacNaughton ever having a place as you describe at Agate Harbor.
The first cottages went up there in the early 1930's. They were :
Carlton, Campbell, Vivian, Schmidt, Rheim, Cudlup, Petermann. One architect
designed place, a one room card playing cabin was Frank Kohlhouse's, now
owned by Ed Williams.
There was a MacNaughton at Agate Beach, just west of Eagle Harbor village. (Bob Carlton, 1/29)
