REGULAR MEETING MINUTES
JUNE 8, 1998
MEETING CALLED TO ORDER: 7:00 PM by Supervisor, Jim Boggio
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
MEMBERS PRESENT: Jim Boggio, John Clarkson, Gerald Johnson, Donald Keith, Nancy Sherk
MEMBERS ABSENT: None
MINUTES: MM/S Keith/Sherk to approve the May minutes - Vote 5-0
TREASURER’S REPORT: Report Accepted
APPROVAL OF BILLS: MM/S Sherk/Johnson to approve - Vote 5-0 (Under Volunteer Fireman’s Fund: Duplicate billing for Memphis Equipment, total fund’s bills should read $514.27).
SUPERVISOR’S REMARKS AND CORRESPONDENCE: Boggio brought the audience up to date regarding the status of the Lighthouse located in Eagle Harbor. Interest has been shown from the Historical Society, Keweenaw County Road Commission, and Eagle Harbor Township. Decision has not been made. The Eagle Harbor Township antique firetruck is being restored. There is no cost to the township for the restoration. Approval for restoration was voted upon at a previous township meeting.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Volunteer Fire Department - Mike Radigan.
- A grant is currently being drafted for the proposed fire truck purchase.
- Dry hydrants - future placements are being researched. Need letters of application to the DNR and
M-DOT for hydrants at the following locations: Gratiot Lake boat launch and Silver River on M-26.
MM/S Keith/Johnson, 5-0 vote.
- Resident, Bruce Wagner, has joined the department.
- A request was made to have additional authorized signatures on file to purchase surplus material.
This request is being discouraged.
- Public Hearing dates have been set: July 16, 1998 6:30 pm, and August 13, 1998 6:30 pm. Letters to be sent to all property owners 10 days prior to meeting. Meetings will take place upon approval of the township attorney.
Water & Well-head Protection Committee - John Wakeman (Absent)
- An Open Meeting will be held to discuss water issues in the village. It is scheduled for July 16, 1998
from 7:35 - 8:35 pm. Currently, there are 143 users on this system.
- Boggio is forming a committee of people to serve on Well-Head Protection.
- An ‘observation well’ installation is under consideration. Approval of $6,000 was voted upon
at a previous township meeting.
- Motion to move $10,000.00 from water fund to the well-head protection was made by Keith, supported by Clarkson, vote unanimous.
- Re-instate $200.00 user fee per year per user for a period of one (1) year. Motion by Johnson,
supported by Keith, vote unanimous.

Solid Waste Committee - Bruce Olson
- An ‘Under Surveillance’ sign has been posted at the facility informing the public of the use of a TV camera on the premises.
Beach Committee - Vacant
Recreation Committee - Barb Sickler
- Saturday, July 4, 1998, the Fourth of July Festivities will be held. Registration for the parade will be
at 9:30 am, at the ball diamond in front of the township hall. The Parade is at 10:00 am. Games for
all ages will follow, along with refreshments afterwards. In case of inclement weather the ‘Fourth’
will be celebrated on the 5th. Anyone interested in helping out with this event, are encouraged to
to contact Barb Sickler at 289-4471.
- PopEye Run: To be held on July 5th, at 8:30 am. Registration to be held prior at the ball diamond.
- An additional 4 basketballs have been purchased by the Recreation Committee.
- It is recommended to have more sand placed in the area of the playground equipment.
- A motion was made by Keith, supported by Sherk, vote unanimous to donate $100.00 to the Fourth of July celebration.
OLD BUSINESS
Discussion on current issues are covered under the appropriate ‘Committees’.
- Gratiot Lake VFD building: Remove from ‘OLD BUSINESS’. VFD will move on this issue sometime in the future.
NEW BUSINESS
- Resident, Fritz Kesanen, of Grand Marais (Goodell Road), to present petition from surrounding residents for a special road assessment: He presented letters from residents who are in support of summer road maintenance/improvements. A 1/2 mill was suggested to cover the cost. A support of more than 51% of the 19 property owners were presented. This issue is to be looked at by the township attorney.
- Summer township/special meetings will be moved from the township hall to the Schoolhouse.
